Grow your own Menhir shallots this spring with this bulb set from Taylors Bulbs - their mild and sweet flavour makes them a wonderful choice for use in salads, soups and stews. This variety is commonly known as the 'French Banana Shallot' thanks to their long and thin shape.
The Menhir variety is ideal for those who have smaller growing areas, as they are suitable for growing in raised beds; in order to achieve good growth they require well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny but sheltered position.
Key Information:
Ten shallot bulbs
Grown in Britain
Require a sunny but sheltered position, with well-drained and fertile soil.
Advice & Tips:
Before growing, apply a general fertiliser to well-drained soil to help the onions grow. Plant the onions approximately 3cm into the soil, and approximately 12cm apart. In prolonged dry spells, the onions should be watered every two weeks.
When the leaves start to die down on the plants, use a fork to slightly ease the shallots out of the soil, then bend the tops over after a few days.
After a couple more days, lift the shallots fully out of the soil and leave them on the surface to ripen.
