Taylors Bulbs - Maris Piper Seed Potatoes - Winter Variety

Enjoy homegrown potatoes in time for Christmas with this pack of ten Maris Piper variety seed potatoes, perfect for a variety of different uses including chipping, roasting and mashing. The potato's fluffy cream flesh rarely discolours during the cooking process, making it a chip shop favourite across the country.

This particular variety of winter harvest potato tubers can be planted either into containers or directly into the ground, allowing anybody to have a go at growing their own potatoes. Maris Piper is a high yielding variety, and if sown in the late summer months, the tubers will have enough time to grow and provide you with a good supply by November.

Key Information:

  • Ten seed potatoes to sow in the autumn for a winter harvest
  • These seed potatoes should be planted as soon as possible after purchase.

How to Grow:

  • If planting into open ground, dig over the area and remove any weeds, adding a general fertiliser and well-rotted compost if available. Plant each tuber 10-13cm deep and 20-23cm apart in a row, with approximately 50cm between each row.
  • Keep the potatoes well watered throughout the growing process; blight can be avoided by keeping the leaves as dry as possible. When the plants have reached a height of approximately 10cm, draw up earth around the sides of the plants to encourage additional potatoes to grow and to exclude light from the tubers.
  • To grow in containers or potato bags, place approximately 10cm of dampened multi-purpose compost into the base and evenly space three tubers on top. Cover with 10cm of compost and water sparingly, ensuring that the compost stays moist but not waterlogged. Once the plants reach a height of approximately 10cm, add more compost and repeat again when the plants grow through this additional layer. Continue with this process until the container is full.
  • Potatoes should be ready to harvest in approximately 12 weeks or after flowering. Harvest as required - the remainder can be left in the ground for up to a month. In sheltered gardens with a light soil, adding extra earth over the rows and covering with straw for insulation can protect from frost, so that the potatoes can be stored in the ground until Christmas. However, in colder areas, or where the soil is wet and heavy, potatoes should be lifted by the end of October.

Useful Information:

When to sow: July to September
