With an excellent flavour and a shiny red skin, the Electric onion variety can be planted during the autumn ready for an early harvest. Its pink-tinged flesh can bring colour to salads and other meals once harvested in the summer, with the semi-globe shaped bulbs storing well for up to two months.
Key Information:
Plant in late Autumn
Add a general fertiliser to improve yield
Requires a sunny position in well drained soil
Toxic to pets if eaten
Advice & Tips:
Prefers full sunshine
In prolonged dry spells, water every two weeks
Allow foliage to die back naturally
Plant individual bulbs 3cm (1") deep and 12cm (5") apart
Check your onions every few days and replant any that has been disturbed by birds
Once the leaves start to die down, ease the onions partly out of the soil using a fork, and then bend the tops over after a few days. The onions can then be lifted out of the soil after a few more days, and left on the surface to ripen.
