Require a sunny but sheltered position, with well-drained and fertile soil.
Advice & Tips:
Before growing, apply a general fertiliser to well-drained soil to help the onions grow. Plant the onions approximately 3cm into the soil, and approximately 12cm apart. In prolonged dry spells, the onions should be watered every two weeks.
When the leaves start to die down on the plants, use a fork to slightly ease the shallots out of the soil, then bend the tops over after a few days.
After a couple more days, lift the shallots fully out of the soil and leave them on the surface to ripen.
Try growing onions with mint to confuse and deter onion fly.
