Monthly Advice For July
Dead Heads!Keep up the regular dead heading of the plants in your garden, this will encourage a longer flowering period and keep your plants looking healthy.Don't Forget The Hoe!Keep on top of the weeds in your garden by regular hoeing. In the midday sun severed plants will soon die off and help to keep your garden borders looking in tip top condition.Harvest The Vegetables.Harvest your vegetables, by picking regularly you will encourage more to be produced. If you do not pick them the plants will stop growing, if your lucky and have a large harvest, why not share it with friends and family? Cutting the plant at an angle will expose a larger absorbing area for the water and aviod the stem resting on the bottom of the vase. Hawthorn. It is now probably the best time of year to trim any hawthorn hedges you might have. Cutting them earlier in the year will probably mean another trim later, but leaving it any later the hawthorn will be very tough and hard to cut. Easy Cuttings.July is the ideal month to take cuttings of your favorite plants. Easy plants to try are Fuchsia, Hydrangea, Pelargoniums and other early flowering shrubs. These examples will do well in pots and should start to root after a couple of weeks, ready to plant next spring. Dont Forget The Greenhouse. If you have growbags in your greenhouse, never let them go short on water this month, otherwise you may find it hard to re-wet them thoroughly. Plants in pots wil also need watering daily and a liquid feed fortnightly. Pests & DiseasesWith the warm and damp weather, July is always a bad month for pests and diseases. Remember to spray your garden regularly to keep on top of the problem. Why not try an organic solution?
