Whats Looking Good In...
Here is a selection of whats looking good in June.
Potentilla
Potentilla is a flowering shrub, adaptable to poor soil conditions, drought tolerant, flood tolerant, pest resistant and very durable. They are free flowering from June until the first frosts.
The flowers are abundant, flattish to saucer shaped and come in whites, yellows, oranges, pinks and deep reds.
Ideal conditions are well drained, reasonably rich soil but will tolerate clay, alkaline or rocky conditions making this an excellent landscaping plant.
Excels in full sun but flower colours are more vivid if shaded a little
Hebe
Hebes are evergreen shrubs often grown for their attractive green foliage and dense spikes and branching flower clusters.
They are low growing and need little if any pruning. Dependant on type, the flowers can be white, soft violet, pink and purplish red.
Does best in full sun and well drained soil but will tolerate part shade, part sun with plenty of compost worked into the soil so the roots do not become dry.
They are fully to half hardy and container friendly.
Lavatera
Lavateras have delicate flowers varying in colour from pure white and soft pink to deep raspberry pink.
The plant likes a well-drained, fertile soil and plenty of sunlight.
Lavatera looks fabulous in an informal garden. The sea of flowers adding a romantic and summery touch from July to October (they are among the longest flowering perennials).
Convolvulus
Small shrub suitable for rock gardens and sunny borders, forming a compact evergreen bush of narrow, silvery foliage. Throughout summer pink buds open into white, trumpet-shaped flowers.
Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
Clematis
Clematis are hardy plants which can be planted at any time of the year, provided the ground is not frozen.
They will grow in practically any garden situation so long as they are given a cool, moist root run, plenty of water and regular feeding.
They are lime-loving plants and do best in a moisture-retaining loam.
Lavender
There are in excess of 50 species of Lavender plants which come in a wide variety of sizes, hardiness, flowers and foliage.
The English Lavender flowers appear from late Spring right through to late summer and can make an excellent low level hedge.
Hostas
Hostas thrive in spots where other plants would not do well, they look superb in a woodland setting, alongside water features, in borders and, of course, on the patio in containers.
The size of their leaves ranges from the size of a teaspoon to a dinner plate and the wide variety of blues, yellows and greens makes choosing rather difficult at times!
All hostas flower, some spectacularly, through all shades of purple to those with white flowers. An increasing number of hostas have fragrant flowers.
Osteospermum
Osteospermums have become very popular as summer bedding plants, either to put in the border or in pots.
Osteospermums require full sun for the flowers to fully open, although while half-closed it is possible to appreciate the different colours on the underneath of the petals.
Hardy Gerainium
Though most geranium possess more than one attribute which makes them desirable components, you will find many of our geranium possess multiple personalities; superb foliage, long displays of flowers and sufficient breadth and vigor to be used as a groundcover.
